Chinese online sellers are actively doing business on Russian platforms
In search of new markets and avoiding Western tariffs, Chinese online sellers are increasingly selling their goods on Russian online platforms. One such platform, Ozon Global, has over 100,000 Chinese sellers who accounted for 80% of all orders on the platform. It is worth noting that in 2022, the number of sellers from China was only 10,000. Another platform, Wildberries, announced last year the launch of a special channel for Chinese suppliers.
Chinese sellers are creating their own e-commerce stores in Russia to fill the gap in the market that arose after the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. They consider Russia a profitable market as Western countries begin to close tax loopholes for Chinese e-commerce.
Chinese e-commerce on Russian platforms is in a state of growth
In 2021, the volume of Chinese e-commerce grew by 13% compared to the previous year, reaching a record 1.25 trillion yuan ($175 billion). However, there are issues with receiving payments in yuan due to sanctions against Russia. Additionally, the Ozon platform restricts the sale of certain goods through its cross-border channel to comply with international requirements.
Registering Russian companies is a popular method among Chinese sellers
Due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, registering Russian companies has become a popular solution among Chinese sellers on Ozon and Wildberries platforms. One company even offers a paid service for registering Russian companies to manage e-commerce stores.
Although Ozon claims that products from foreign sellers make up only 5% of the platform's total range, and Wildberries limits cooperation with Chinese sellers due to the lack of local manufacturers and suppliers who can deliver their products directly to all countries where the company operates.
