Switzerland will ban the wearing of burqas in public places from 2025.
From January 1, 2025, Switzerland will enforce a ban on wearing burqas in public places. Violators of this ban will face fines of up to 1,000 Swiss francs ($1,144). This was reported by the Swiss government.
The ban on wearing burqas does not apply to airplanes, diplomatic and consular institutions, as well as places of worship and other sacred places.
It is also permitted to cover the face for reasons related to health and safety, local customs, or weather conditions. Burqas will also be allowed for artistic and entertainment reasons and for advertising.
It is allowed to wear coverings necessary for personal protection when exercising freedom of expression and assembly, provided that it is approved by the competent authority.
In 2021, participants in the Swiss referendum supported a ban on wearing clothes that conceal the face. According to the national broadcaster SRF, more than half of the voters supported this ban.
After the terrorist attack in June 2019, the Tunisian government banned covering faces in government institutions. It is also prohibited to wear clothing that conceals the face in the Netherlands.
