Bike paths 'from nowhere to nowhere': Popenko spoke about the cycling absurdity in Ukraine.

Critique of Cycling Infrastructure in Kyiv
Head of the Consumers' Union of Public Utilities Oleg Popenko expressed his outrage over the state of cycling infrastructure in Kyiv. According to him, the bike paths in the capital do not form a single network, complicating the movement of cyclists between districts. Various fragmentary sections are not connected into a logical continuous system.
'There are these bike paths from nowhere to nowhere, which start somewhere 400 meters and end 400 meters later,' Popenko commented.
The expert noted that in European cities, such as Leuven in Belgium or Munich in Germany, there is well-thought-out cycling infrastructure. They have a unified network of bike paths, equipped with traffic lights and other conveniences that promote safe and comfortable movement for cyclists.
'They even have small traffic lights for bike paths. That is, there is a big traffic light for cars and a small one for bike paths. I was amazed at how well thought out everything was,' Popenko noted.
The expert expressed particular criticism regarding the bike path between Kyiv and Irpin, which he believes does not solve transportation problems, but instead creates dangers for cyclists due to the lack of appropriate infrastructure.
'Cyclists continue to ride on the highway where cars drive, and they are regularly hit,' he emphasized.
Popenko sees the main problem as the bike paths being unconnected and not built according to safety requirements.
The presented critique of the cycling infrastructure in Kyiv, voiced by the head of the Consumers' Union of Public Utilities, highlights the issue of fragmentary and ill-conceived bike paths in the capital, compared to European cities. The shortcomings of cycling infrastructure can pose threats to the safety and convenience of cyclists, so it is important to take care of creating a unified and safe network of bike paths in the city.Read also
