Departure to Romania — what items are prohibited to cross the border
Romania has sheltered many of our citizens. When leaving Ukraine, it is necessary to pay attention to your luggage, as some items may not be allowed through customs. This applies to food products, prohibited goods, and currency valuables.

The Novyny.LIVE website explains what Ukrainians cannot take across the border into Romania.

What is prohibited to bring into Romania

Ukrainians can travel through the territory of the neighboring state for 90 days within a 180-day period using a biometric passport. Alternatively, they can apply for temporary protection if fleeing from a full-scale war. At the border, problems may arise when transporting prohibited items.

According to the Visit Ukraine website, there is a ban on bringing the following items into Romania:

  • narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances;
  • weapons and ammunition;
  • materials of pornographic or extremist nature;
  • toxic and radioactive substances;
  • prescription drugs;
  • pirated goods and counterfeit items;
  • wild animals.

As for food, meat-dairy products, honey, canned goods, and any products that could lead to animal diseases are prohibited. Pets can be brought in but only with a veterinary passport indicating vaccinations against major diseases.

What items will pass through the Romanian border

Custom duties, VAT, and excise taxes do not apply to personal items (clothing, one unit of each type of technology, accessories, etc.), medicines for personal use (a prescription or medical confirmation may be required), and 10 liters of fuel in a portable canister. It is essential to know the following limits:

  • up to 1 liter of spirits or alcohol over 22%;
  • up to 2 liters of wine or 16 liters of beer;
  • up to 40 cigarettes, or 50 cigars, or 250 grams of tobacco;
  • up to 200 g of coffee;
  • up to 50 ml of perfume.

Travelers can also carry currency valuables, meaning cash or bank metals. The law allows the transport of an amount up to 10,000 euros equivalent without written declaration. In the case of exceeding the limit, the funds must be declared, and proof of source must be provided. Otherwise, the currency may be confiscated.

How to get to Romania without a car

The best option is to buy a bus ticket. If you are leaving from Kyiv to Bucharest, the lowest price for a seat on transport is 2,000 UAH, and the travel Time is 22 hours. The most expensive ticket in July 2025 (with a transfer at Budapest airport) costs over 7,000 UAH. You can save at least 500 UAH by leaving from Chernivtsi, and the journey will take only 11 hours.

For example, shells are not allowed to be transported from Egypt, the UAE, Thailand, and the Dominican Republic. In Italy, a fine of up to 3,000 euros is imposed for exporting sand from the island of Sicily.

We have also written about what happens in summer with prices for products in popular supermarkets in Romania. For chicken eggs, you need to pay an average of 12.99 lei (125 UAH), for drinking water in plastic bottles - from 3.99 to 5.49 lei (38-52 UAH).

Ukrainians traveling to Romania should take into account restrictions and prohibitions on transporting certain goods across the border. The list of prohibited items includes drugs, weapons, materials of pornographic and extremist nature, as well as toxic substances and pirated goods. At the same time, there are restrictions on bringing food, currency valuables, and personal items that require additional declaration or permission. It is also important to consider the rules for transporting pets and medical preparations when crossing the border.
